DENVER – One Chance to Grow Up Urges Congressional leadership to Delay action on SAFER Act

One Chance to Grow Up, a national non-profit, strongly urges the U.S. Senate and House leadership to not expedite the SAFER Act (S. 2860) during the lame duck session.

The SAFER Act, which aims to protect cannabis businesses and their employees, fails to include critical health and safety measures, including adequate product transparency and youth safeguards. If the SAFER Act is truly about safety, then the safety of our nation’s children and young people should be addressed simultaneously.

“Right now, the SAFER Act is anything but safe for kids,” said Diane Carlson, National Policy Director for One Chance to Grow Up. “Congress must at a minimum require common-sense product safeguards that protect youth before giving manufacturers and sellers of today’s ultra-potent kid-friendly products complete access to our nation’s capital markets and expansive U.S. banking privileges without sufficient product accountability.”

One of the organization’s primary concerns is the surge in ultra-potent products, such as edibles and concentrates with THC levels exceeding 90%. These products, marketed in attractive forms like candies and snacks, have led to increased accidental ingestions and serious mental and physical health conditions that are disproportionately harming our nation’s children and young people.

.One Chance to Grow Up urges Congress to:

  • Regulate today’s products including THC potencies and amounts to reduce risks to youth and other vulnerable groups;
  • Ban marketing and packaging that appeals to children; and
  • Implement federal oversight to address gaps in state-level regulations.

One Chance to Grow Up will continue working to ensure that all cannabis-related policies prioritize the health and safety of children and young adults.  A copy of the letter to Congressional leadership on behalf of One Chance to Grow Up’s tens of thousands members and community partners from across the country is linked above.
