Major Win for Protecting Kids from Synthesized THC Products in the 2024 Farm Bill

We have incredible news to share with you! Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture took a significant step forward in protecting our children from the dangers of marijuana and THC products.

Thanks to the courageous leadership of Representative Mary Miller from Illinois (R), the committee voted to amend the 2024 Farm Bill to close a loophole that allowed hemp products to be synthesized into intoxicating versions of THC. These products have been sold without proper regulation in gas stations, convenience stores, garden supply centers, and even grocery stores—places where young people can easily access them.

“My amendment will close the loophole created in the 2018 Farm Bill that allows intoxicating hemp products like delta-8 to be sold,” Representative Miller said ahead of the vote. “These products are being marketed to children and sending hundreds of them to the hospital. We must stop teenagers and young children from being exposed to addictive and harmful drugs.”

Representative John Rose (R-TN) added, “Hemp is a product that requires and demands the correct guidelines, and if we do not provide these guidelines, we are threatening the safety of Americans.”

As you know, our organization has been dedicated to protecting children and adolescents from the harmful effects of marijuana and THC for over a decade. The science is clear: introducing THC into developing brains can lead to serious mental health challenges and other risks. Already, children have been harmed by unregulated access to these dangerous products. That’s why this amendment is so crucial.

We commend Representative Miller for her brave and bold action. While there was a lively debate, her amendment garnered support from many members of the Agriculture Committee, and the committee ultimately voted to send the amended Farm Bill to the House floor. This is potentially an historic development that will help safeguard our kids.

This is not likely to be an easy process. We expect challenges ahead from those in the well-funded hemp industry who have profited from creating products that attract children. However, we at One Chance to Grow Up remain committed to advocating for the well-being of kids and families. We will continue to closely monitor the progress of the Farm Bill and keep you informed every step of the way.

Your support has been instrumental in making this progress possible. Together, we are making a real difference in protecting the future of our children. Thank you for standing with us in this critical mission.
